  8.           The Mariner IV spacecraft's ionization chamber experi-  
  9. ment, a portion of which failed two weeks ago, late yesterday  
  10. ceased returning any useful data, Mariner Project officials at  
  11. the Jet Propulsion Laboratory reported today. 
  12.           On March 3, telemetry from NASA's Mars-bound spacecraft  
  13. indicated that the Geiger-Mueller tube portion of the instrument  
  14. was not operating properly.  The ion chamber itself, which failed  
  15. yesterday, was the other part of the experiment. 
  16.           Both parts of the instrument operated from a common  
  17. power supply, leading experimenters to suspect a common cause for  
  18. the failures in both portions. 
  19.           The instrument, which measures proton radiation above  
  20. 10 million electron volts and electron radiation above 1/2 mil-  
  21. lion electron volts, has made and transmitted to Earth thousands  
  22. of readings since Mariner IV was launched last November 28. 
  23.           The failure occurred on the 109th day of the mission to  
  24. Mars.  Mariner II, which flew by Venus in 1962, travelled 109  
  25. days to that planet and continued communicating with Earth for an  
  26. additional 20 days. 
  27.           The only other instrument malfunction aboard Mariner IV  
  28. was that of the solar plasma probe, which began functioning abnor- 
  29. mally last December 7 but since has resumed recording useful  
  30. information.

  34.           At 6 p.m. PST today, Mariner IV was travelling at a  
  35. velocity of 27,743 miles per hour relative to Earth and had  
  36. reached a point in space 35,000,604 miles from Earth.  The space-  
  37. craft has charted more than 178 million miles in its arcing path  
  38. around the sun and is moving at a sun-based speed of 58,560 miles  
  39. per hour. 
  40.           Next Monday, the 114th day of flight, Mariner IV will  
  41. have completed half its mission to Mars.  This spacecraft will fly 
  42. by the target planet at an altitude of about 5000 miles next July  
  43. 14, 228 days after launch from Cape Kennedy.
